Congress doesn’t seem particularly concerned with protecting Americans with a border wall. Their number one objective? Get elected this fall.
With the midterms rapidly approaching, both Democrats and Republicans running for reelection are hesitant to throw their vote behind something controversial.
And Trump is sick and tired of it.
“We are getting the wall done. But I’ve had so many people, good people, great people – they would rather not do [it] before [November]. They’d rather do it right after the election,” Trump told Fox News after a rally in Montana.
But the budget is due September 30th, and if Trump’s request for $25 billion for the wall is not met, the President may not sign it.
If Congress fails, President Trump may turn to someone else to get it done.
From The Daily Mail:
President Donald Trump said Friday that he’s considering using military resources to finish construction of his long-promised border wall instead of relying on Congress to fund the project through the Homeland Security Department’s budget.
He also wouldn’t eliminate the possibility of a government shutdown if Democrats continue to confound his efforts to appropriate money for the project on the U.S.-Mexico border.
‘We have two options,’ he told DailyMail.com aboard Air Force One as he flew from Billings, Montana to Fargo, North Dakota. ‘We have military, we have homeland security.’
Many speculated Trump would use the military in some way to build the wall when Congress passed the omnibus bill back in March, which provided the military with a huge budget increase.
Sec. James Mattis came out with a statement within days of the bill passing, saying that the wall was a matter of national security.
National security is the military’s domain, which puts the construction of the wall under the military’s control.
The president would still like to convince Congress to fund the wall, but he is prepared to do what is necessary to get the wall completed, because that is what a leader does.
What do you think? Should the military build the wall if Congress can’t?
