Trump has gathered nearly double the funds compared to Biden from Georgians who have given $200 or more, the latest filings from the Federal Election Commission show. Trump has raised $2.2 million, which places Georgia as the sixth top state in terms of financial backing for the former president’s campaign. Biden has brought in $1.7 million, trailing the Republican in the cash race and state polling.
Biden still leads Trump in overall fundraising nationally by $18 million. But that lead doesn’t translate to an edge in all key states where Trump’s polling numbers are besting Biden.
Georgia may be a bellwether indicator of how the overall campaign is going for both candidates. Georgia voters headed to the polls for primary elections on Tuesday. Trump won without a doubt on the GOP ballot. This win set him up as the presumptive GOP nominee which could further threaten Biden’s ability to win in the fall in a head-to-head matchup.
Trump to date has topped the presidential primary field in terms of donations by gaining funds from 60,000 Georgia donors. That number dwarfs Biden who attracted donations from 6,217 people this election cycle. A Georgia judge is set to make a ruling any day regarding District Attorney Fani Willis in connection to her romantic relationship with special prosecutor Nathan Wade whom she appointed to the case. That relationship, according to trump attorneys, disqualifies her to prosecute the case.
Trump still faces a criminal trial in New York regarding alleged hush money in less than two weeks. A strong showing of support among Georgia voters in the GOP primary could go a long way to dictate Trump’s primary path going forward. He’ll need the votes and the funds from donors there to sustain his campaign.
