Though he hasn’t confirmed anything, former President Donald Trump has hinted numerous times that he might run again in 2024. In fact, he once said only a “bad call from a doctor” would stop him.
He also leads other potential Republican nominees by a very wide margin, according to party polls. That’s why many assume that Trump will make the formal announcement in 2022.
However, if one Democrat leader gets his way, Donald won’t have a chance.
Left-wing politicians on Capitol Hill attempted to oust the former POTUS twice during his tenure in Washington, but neither attempt succeeded. This left liberals with a bitter taste in their mouths.
And many Democrat politicos and citizens can’t stand the idea of Trump running for office again.
That’s where Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) comes in — he thinks he has a plan that would bar the controversial Trump from running in the 2024 presidential election.
This involves the January 6 accusations, and utilizes a Constitutional amendment. Raskin and his colleagues must convince other lawmakers that Trump was guilty of a particular crime, however.
Rep. Raskin believes this is a very real possibility, too.
Via Washington Examiner:
Raskin suggested that the constitutional provision preventing those who ‘engaged in insurrection or rebellion’ from holding office may prevent Trump from becoming president for a second, nonconsecutive term.
Donald Trump is technically eligible to run again, having lost to Joe Biden in the last election.
But Raskin and other Democrat leaders say the former President shouldn’t be allowed to campaign, and should be banned from holding federal or state office. This all due to Trump’s alleged role in the Jan. 6 riots.
On top of that, Rep. Raskin said this could apply to other Republican members of Congress as well.
The only problem is that Trump was acquitted by the Senate on charges of inciting an insurrection. And he was also acquitted on charges of abuse of power earlier in his tenure.
That’s why Raskin admits they “don’t have a lot of precedent” for this particular case. Though he does cite Trump’s impeachment by the House majority vote, which could count for something.
The Democrat leader is talking about the 14th amendment, which was designed to “focus on the inner core of the must culpable people,” and stop anyone from participating in open rebellion.
Multiple bills put forth by other Democrat leaders are trying to use the 14th amendment against Republicans who supported Trump’s theory that the 2020 election was stolen.
But right now, Raskin’s theory is just a theory. As he said:
We’ll see what [a] court says, because the alternative view is that Congress needs to act and Congress needs to decree that someone participated in an insurrection or rebellion.
It’s unlikely that this plan will succeed, but it’s a glimpse of what Democrats might be willing to do to stop Trump from running in 2024.
President Joe Biden’s approval ratings continue to tumble and many members of his administration also have shockingly low ratings.
Then there’s the shift away from the Democrat Party we’re seeing in recent polls; America definitely seems to be moving away from preferring left-wing politicians, and 2021 was a rough year for liberals.
Amid all this, it seems very possible that Trump will storm back onto the scene. And it’s also clear that many Democrats are concerned.
- Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) thinks he could stop former President Donald Trump from running again in 2024.
- He cites the 14th amendment, which bars someone from holding state or federal office if they’re guilty of “inciting insurrection.”
- But as the Senate acquitted Trump on these charges, Raskin admits it might be difficult to pin this crime on the former POTUS.
