Texas Republican Shuts Down 2nd Amendment Gun Control Deal – One of 10 GOP Compromisers, Senator Cornyn Just Walked Out of Talks

What’s Happening:

In the aftermath of the Uvalde shooting, Congress has been scrambling to come up with something. Democrats were quick to rush to gun control, their usual “solution” to shootings.

A group of senators was engaged in closed-door negotiations. It seemed a few Republicans were willing to compromise on their pro-Second Amendment stance.

But, one Texas senator decided to shut the charade down.

From Daily Mail:

Republican senator John Cornyn of Texas said he was ‘done’ as he walked out of Thursday’s closed-door session of gun law negotiations after nearly two hours, saying he was flying home.

‘This is the hardest part because at some point, you just got to make a decision. And when people don’t want to make a decision, you can’t accomplish the result. And that’s kind of where we are right now,’ Mr Cornyn said.

After trying to come to an agreement with Democrats during a two-hour negotiation session, Sen. John Cornyn walked out.

He announced he was “done” with the bargaining and was going home.

It appears Democrats have been unwilling to come to an agreement with Republicans on a compromised bill.

Republicans have long pushed for arming teachers as one method to discourage would-be shooters. Democrats, including Joe Biden, have strongly rejected this measure.

The left, instead, has demanded stricter limits on who can buy firearms. Some want an outright “assault weapons” ban.

It looked likely that something was going to pass in the Senate when 10 Republicans were willing to “compromise.” That’s usually code for, bend over backward for the left.

But with Cornyn walking out of negotiations, Democrats lost the 60 votes they need to overcome the filibuster.

It is unlikely they will be able to find another Republican willing to meet their demands.

Key Takeaways:

  • Cornyn of Texas walked out of gun control negotiations with Democrats.
  • He said, “I’m done” and announced he was flying back to Texas.
  • Democrats have pushed for strong gun control in light of recent events.
