They stole from the American people, but now swift justice is falling on the Supreme Court.
Most of the time, liberal judges have abused their power to oppose the President. But in this recent, shocking story, an entire court is in deep water.
Seems like these judges had far too much power over how they spent their cash. Perhaps you think he used taxpayer funds to rebuild a school. Maybe help the underprivileged in the community.
No, he bought himself a $32,000 couch.
From Yahoo News:
A West Virginia Supreme Court justice facing a 23-count federal indictment was impeached Monday for spending $363,000 on his office renovations — part of an extraordinary move by lawmakers to consider putting the entire court on trial in the Senate…
But he was just the first. Now all 4 justices have been impeached. From The Hill:
The state lawmakers first voted to impeach Justice Allen Loughry on eight articles after he spent $363,000 in renovations to his office, according to the network. He was reportedly found to have lied to the House Finance Committee about having a $42,000 antique desk and computers, owned by the state, transferred to his home and used state vehicles for his personal use.
Justice Robin Davis was impeached after using $500,000 for office renovations, the network added.
It’s rare that we hear about an entire court on the chopping block. But that’s just the kind of age we live in.
Once judges were held above reproach. Sure, lawmakers might be corrupt, but not our judges! Sadly, that’s no longer the case.
This scandal was inevitable, given the West Virginia law. The court was allowed to spend cash as they saw fit. There were no rules or requirements. Not even an approval process.
Gee, I wonder where they went wrong!
It’s reasonable to think that a judge should renovate his office. But $42k for a desk? $32k for a couch? Couldn’t that money have gone to anything worthier?
We really can’t be surprised to hear that the state wants to impeach the rest of the court. Imagine how long this abuse has been going on. Probably years. Thousands, maybe millions, of West Virginia tax dollars (and probably some federal) were being wasted.
Perhaps this impeachment will go a long way in fixing the state’s broken system. And maybe a few more states—with wasteful practices–should follow suit.
