Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) once again popped off about how he doesn’t stand with the majority of Republicans as he paraded his liberalist attitudes during a leftist news media interview. He made clear his position on voting in the 2024 presidential election.
There is really no surprise in what he said unless someone doesn’t know how he often opposes Republicans who have strong spines. Romney twice voted to impeach then-President Donald Trump and now he is taking a stand on the side of Democrats based on current standings in the presidential race.
Trump is far ahead of GOP challengers in early polling, and he is a long-time critic of Romney’s status as a Republican and the senator’s connections in Washington, D.C. Romney seems to take advantage of opportunities to cast dispersion on Trump when he gets in front of liberal media outlets.
Romney made it a point to pop off about how he would rather support “a number of Democrats” over Trump in 2024, according to Fox News. Romney laid out who he would vote for and also targeted GOP presidential candidate and businessman Vivek Ramaswamy in his disparaging comments.

“Maybe not Vivek, but the others that are running would be acceptable to me, and I’d be happy to vote for them,” Romney stated. “I’d be happy to vote for a number of the Democrats, too. I mean, it would be an upgrade, in my opinion, from Donald Trump – and perhaps also from Joe Biden.”
Romney appears quick to verbally strike at GOP candidates he doesn’t like. The failed presidential candidate is not running for re-election in 2024 after announcing his retirement from the Senate. Romney’s term ends in Jan. 2025.
Trump called Romney’s retirement “fantastic news” for America, Utah, and the Republican Party on Truth Social shortly after his announcement, according to NBC News at the time. A Trump spokesperson relayed to Fox News how the former president feels about Romney’s verbal digs.
“Voters aren’t going to take advice from a loser and quitter like Mittens,” the spokesperson stated in an email.
Ramaswamy was quick to respond to Romney’s lack of support for the overall field of GOP presidential candidates.
“Turns out he’s opposed to America-First itself, not just one man. Newsflash, Mitt: I didn’t vote for you either, and I still call on your niece Ronna to resign,” Ramaswamy told Fox News Digital in a statement Monday. Ronna McDaniel is chair of the Republican National Committee.
Romney himself may have had the best viewpoint about how many Republicans feel about him and his political record. He noted how the country faces “critical challenges” – mounting national debt, climate change, and the ambitious authoritarians of Russia and China – all problems under his watch.
“Frankly, it’s time for a new generation of leaders,” Romney said in September. “They’re the ones that need to make the decisions that will shape the world they will be living in.”
That new generation of leaders won’t have to listen to Romney while shaping the future.
