What’s Happening:
We are still months away from knowing who will represent the Republican Party in the next presidential election. However, there are already several candidates who will be challenging Joe Biden in November.
Cornell West ditched the Green Party and is running as an independent. Even more surprising has been Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s decision to leave the Democrats and run as an independent candidate. But they are not the only ones interested in appearing on the ballet.
Cenk Uygur is an infamous media pundit and founder of YouTube channel, The Young Turks. He is known for promoting radical claims and getting into fights with conservative figures. He recently announced a campaign for president. But there is one very big problem.
From Daily Wire:
The progressive commentator, an immigrant from Turkey, reportedly said he does not believe the U.S. Constitution’s “natural born citizen” clause will disqualify him in a campaign for the Democratic Party’s 2024 nomination against President Joe Biden. In speaking with Semafor, Uygur predicted a “slam dunk” victory if and when the issue reaches the U.S. Supreme Court, suggesting the legal challenge was a “good reason” to run. “I’m tired of 25 million Americans having this albatross around their neck,” he added.
Cenk Uygur announced he will run against Joe Biden for the Democrat Party’s nomination. That is an uphill battle in and of itself, as the Democratic establishment has refused to support any challengers to Biden’s nomination.
RFK was forced to run as an independent, after realizing the party was never going to treat his campaign seriously.
But Uygur faces a much bigger obstacle to his presidential aspirations. As an immigrant from Turkey, he is barred from running for president. Article II, Section 1, Clause 5 of the Constitution states that only a “natural born Citizen” is eligible for the presidency.
Anyone born outside the country can run for other seats, such as in the House or Senate. But only people born in the United States–and are therefore “natural born” citizens–can become president.
Uygur, however, is convinced he can take this issue to the Supreme Court and have this part of the law changed. No one has ever tried to change this requirement within the Constitution. It is highly unlikely that Supreme Court justices, liberal or conservative, are willing to consider changing it.
Uygur is known for his on-air histrionics and emotional outbursts. It is likely he is unwilling to see the error of his ways. He claimed that 25 million Americans have “this albatross” around their neck. It appears Uygur thinks that immigrants to America are burdened because they cannot run for president.
Key Takeaways:
- The Young Turks founder Cenk Uygur announced he was running against Joe Biden.
- Uygur, an immigrant from Turkey, is not eligible to run for president, per the Constitution.
- The radical leftist believed he could change this rule, by going to the Supreme Court.
