Joe Biden hasn’t put together a stellar track record as president and his low approval rating among voters is causing panic among Democrats. Biden is facing surprise lows in support from fellow liberals and he is also facing the big orange elephant in the room.
Biden won the White House by slipping ahead of former President Donald Trump in key swing states. Trump is gaining separation from Biden in the polls, and one Democrat powerbroker is saying Biden must make a decision that could cost him the election. Former Obama adviser David Axelrod wants Biden to act wisely going forward.

“Only @JoeBiden can make this decision. If he continues to run, he will be the nominee of the Democratic Party. What he needs to decide is whether that is wise; whether it’s in HIS best interest or the country’s?” Axelrod asked in a thread on X.
Axelrod’s comments followed a new poll showing Biden losing to Trump in five battleground states Biden won in 2020. The New York Times-Siena College poll found Trump leading Biden by 10 points in Nevada, six points in Georgia, five points in both Arizona and Michigan, and four points in Pennsylvania. In Wisconsin, Biden held a two-point lead over Trump. Biden won all six states in 2020.
The poll is an ominous sign for the Democratic Party that Axelrod said created a possible harsh decision if the party wants to win the 2024 presidential race. Panic is building among the party faithful.
“It’s very late to change horses; a lot will happen in the next year that no one can predict & Biden’s team says his resolve to run is firm,” Axelrod posted. “He’s defied CW before but this will send tremors of doubt thru the party–not ‘bed-wetting,’ but legitimate concern.”
Democrats may want to consider this poll as a warning for more than “legitimate concern.” The new poll exposed more warning signs for Democrats, beyond Biden’s age. The Times reported Trump support from Black voters reached unprecedented levels, with a record 22% of the demographic siding with him over Biden across the six states.
Biden’s presidency has been painful for many Americans. A majority of voters across all income levels admitted they had been “personally hurt” by the president’s policies. They also widely trusted Trump over Biden on handling the economy.
Axelrod isn’t alone in sounding the alarm over Biden’s run for re-election. Other Democrats have been warning for some time that Biden is in trouble in the polls. Democratic strategist James Carville has warned liberals about Biden’s uphill prospects for holding the White House, saying voters “don’t want” Biden to lead the Democratic Party on the ballot in 2024.
