New York City Forced to Make Shock Decision – Look What They Have to Do to ‘Keep Residents Safe’

Leftist Democrats for years railed against so-called unfair law enforcement policies. They clamored and cried about “defunding” the police to create fairness and equity in the criminal justice system.

These programs worked well in Democrat-run cities across the country where criminals were arrested and quickly released back onto the streets. Police departments suffered losses in staff by the thousands as law enforcement budgets were cut.

Leftists sang the praises of their Democrat leaders for ushering in such progressive policies. Now many of those same police haters are crying and turning to extreme law enforcement measures to regain control of their crime-ridden cities.

From Breitbart:
The state of New York is sending the National Guard, State Police, and MTA cops into New York City subways, so commuters “feel safe” amid a leadership failure by the mayor that has devastated the city.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) announced Wednesday that she would deploy state law enforcement to the Big Apple subway network, as well as “teams of mental health workers,” to “help commuters and visitors to the city feel safe,” according to the New York Times.

You know it’s bad in the Big Apple when cop-hating liberals send in the big guns, literally, to take back control of the central commuter system. Every aspect of business in the city depends on people getting to and from work in a safe manner.

The liberal governor is sending 1,000 members of this coordinated police package to conduct “bag checks” among almost 3 million subway riders per day. Exact plans of how the police would be deployed and their responsibilities were not released.

Hochul seemed to speak for the people until she slipped out that part of her focus is tackling “deadly weapons” and not the criminals that wield them.

“These brazen heinous attacks on our subway system will not be tolerated,” Hochul said Wednesday. “No one heading to their job or to visit family or go to a doctor appointment should worry that the person sitting next to them possesses a deadly weapon.”

Absent from Hochul’s “bold” announcement was New York City Mayor Eric Adams. The two Democrats don’t always see eye-to-eye on policies or who is going to get the publicity for high-profile actions.

Actions to combat crime in the subway system appear long overdue. News reports indicated that subway crime rates have surged to start 2024, up 20% compared to the first two months of last year. So far three people have been shot dead on trains and subway platforms.

Hochul also plans to push for a new law that would allow judges to ban anyone convicted of a violent transit assault from using the city subway or bus system.

How this plays out should be interesting since the city maintains a “bail reform law” that allows people to be released from jail after a criminal arrest. Criminals have brazenly committed lawless acts, been arrested, and then bragged about being right back onto the streets to commit more crimes.

Key Takeaways:

  • The New York governor announced plans to send military troops into New York City.
  • Kathy Hochul said the plan is needed to stop crime hitting the transit system.
  • She also wants a new law that bans certain criminals from using the subway.
