It’s no secret that Mitch McConnell is on the outs with many Republicans. He has refused to back Donald Trump, even as the 45th president works to help the GOP win big this year. Trump has been increasingly critical of McConnell, often calling on Senate Republicans to choose another leader.
And it seems other Republicans are growing tired of Mitch’s antics. Even though Republicans from one state backed a 2022 Senate candidate, McConnell defied their choice. He has even spent millions attacking this candidate in support of a D.C. swamp dweller. So, the party had no choice.
From The Hill:
The Alaska Republican Party on Monday voted to censure Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) for what they called spreading “divisive and misleading statements” about their endorsed candidate in Alaska’s Senate race…
McConnell, who runs the Senate Leadership Fund, has spent millions on ads attacking Tshibaka to support Murkowski, a 20-year incumbent.
According to FactCheck.org, some of the ads aired in the race have been misleading, including one claiming Tshibaka wants to ban birth control by mail.
The Alaskan Republican Party has rallied around Trump-backed Kelly Tshibaka for Senate. But because of the new voting system in the state, incumbent Sen. Lisa Murkowski will also be on the ballot. This poses a big problem for Republicans since the party will be working against itself.
Perhaps McConnell could have agreed with the state’s choice of backing Tshibaka. Instead, he threw millions into a smear campaign against her, all to prop up hated RINO Murkowski. The Alaska GOP censured Murkowski previously, for turning on Trump. It seems in no way will Republicans will vote for her.
But these attack ads might sway independent voters–even though the ads have been found to be false by FactCheck.org.
Now, why would McConnell spend millions on ads with misleading and possibly dishonest information? Why would he actually do all this against his own party? Is it because he cares more about protecting the D.C. swamp, even if that benefits the Democrats?
We can’t say why. But it seems like this censure is well deserved.
- The Alaska Republican Party censured Mitch McConnell for running ads against their candidate.
- McConnell is helping Sen. Murkowski, not the favored candidate by Alaska’s GOP.
- Some of the ads he paid for were labeled false by fact-checkers.
