What’s Happening:
Ever since Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz got Kevin McCarthy removed from Speaker, the House has been in chaos. Without a confirmed Speaker, there is uncertainty over Congress’s future.
Republicans nominated Rep. Steve Scalise, a respected member of the party. But several Republicans refused to support him, leaving the seat once again in question.
Now, the former House Speaker is discussing the crisis. He has made his prediction of who the next Speaker should be. And he appears to be behind him all the way.
From Daily Wire:
Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) said on Sunday he believes Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) will rally enough support to become the next Speaker of the House…“I did walk in with more support during this time, but I believe, at the end of the day, Jim can get there. And I’m doing everything I can to help him be able to become speaker,” McCarthy told anchor Maria Bartiromo on “Sunday Morning Futures.”
Once again, the government faces a shutdown. Our closest ally in the Middle East has gone to war. And Congress is unable to do anything about these problems because it is too busy trying to find a new Speaker.
Former Speaker Kevin McCarthy is backing Rep. Jim Jordan after Steve Scalise dropped out of the race. McCarthy said he had more support than Jordan, but he would do “everything” he can to help him become Speaker.
Democrats have been critical of Republicans, ever since Gaetz relied on Democrat votes to remove McCarthy. The liberal party has a reputation of uniting, despite deep divisions and conflict. Republicans, however, have a reputation of putting themselves ahead of the party, which has resulted in a long history of disruption and chaos.
If Jim Jordan is confirmed as Speaker, he will have the same problems as his predecessor. With such a small majority in the House, fringe Republicans will use that vulnerability to grandstand, block legislation, and sow chaos.
Democrats will no doubt use this as we approach a critical election. Will Jordan be able to unite Republicans and protect their majority in 2024? Not if Gaetz, MTG, and other right-wingers have anything to say about it.
Key Takeaways:
- Kevin McCarthy predicted Jim Jordan would be the next Speaker.
- Congress was plunged into chaos after a Republican turned on his party.
- The House has been unable to do any business, even as crises hit the globe.
