FBI Manhunt for Wanted Politician Ends – He Faced Down the FBI in Shootout

What’s Happening:

Last week, we learned the FBI and U.S. Marshals offered a combined $20,000 reward for the arrest of a former state chief of staff. Roy McGrath served as Gov. Larry Hogan’s right-hand man. But he was outed in several alleged criminal acts. He flew the coop when he was supposed to appear in court.

For weeks, law enforcement has been searching for him. The man’s home in Florida was abandoned and police warned he could be anywhere. Well, it looks like the long arm of the law caught up with McGrath. But he refused to surrender. So, the worst ended up happening.

From The Post Millennial:

Roy McGrath, the fugitive ex-chief of staff for former Maryland Governor Larry Hogan, died of a gunshot wound at a Tennessee hospital Monday night after a confrontation with FBI agents…

According to FOX 5, McGrath, 53, was located by agents Monday at a shopping center in the 10700 block of Kingston Pike at Lovell Road in Knoxville at approximately 6:30 pm.

FBI agents found McGrath near Knoxville, Tennessee. The man refused to turn himself in and engaged the police in a shootout. He was wounded and taken to a local hospital, where he died of his wounds. At the time of this writing, it is unclear if he was wounded by himself or law enforcement.

It is a tragic end to an ugly story. McGrath was wanted by police for embezzling money from the state government. He had lied to the governor and state agencies to allegedly pad his own pockets. When he was charged with several counts of criminal activity, he fled his home.

His lawyer says McGrath maintained his innocence, despite fleeing police and refusing to appear in court.

This is a dramatic end to an otherwise common situation. Far too many state and local politicians try to abuse their power to get rich quickly. Many of them cheat taxpayers. Some con charities and outreach organizations. Only a few of them end up getting caught and facing justice.

And despite terrible endings like this one, far too few learn the lesson that crime doesn’t pay.

Key Takeaways:

  • Roy McGrath, former chief of staff and fugitive, was killed in a shootout with the FBI.
  • McGrath was accused of stealing money and lying to a state agency.
  • McGrath had fled his home last month, refusing to appear in court.
