House Republicans Just Made History – Nobody in D.C. Thought This Could Happen

Last week, House Republicans held a vote to impeach Biden’s DHS head Alejandro Mayorkas. Republicans have long blamed Mayorkas for the ongoing crisis at the border. As head of the DHS, Mayorkas issued memos preventing Border Patrol from deporting migrants.

And Mayorkas’ DHS is quickly processing border jumpers and releasing them into the country. Most of the time, these migrants do not have court dates and are not being monitored by the government.

House Republicans failed to impeach Mayorkas, after several of their party voted against the measure. They held a new vote to impeach Mayorkas this week. But the results might not be what you are expecting.

From The Post Millennial:
The House gathered on Tuesday night to reconsider last week’s failed motion to impeach Biden’s DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, and they did so, with a vote of 214 in favor to 213 against. Rep. Steve Scalise was in the House this week and was able to cast his vote in favor of impeachment…

Mayorkas’ impeachment marks the first time a cabinet member has been impeached in 150 years.

House Republicans successfully impeached DHS head Mayorkas. But they did so only by one vote. Several Republicans voted against the measure. House Majority Leader Steve Scalise cast the deciding vote.

It is unknown why some Republicans defied the party to vote in favor of Mayorkas. The border crisis is becoming a major issue. Critics have strongly condemned Mayorkas and President Biden over inaction, as over 6 million migrants entered the country illegally.

Most Americans would expect Republicans to be united against Biden’s seeming open borders policy. Yet the House was only able to impeach Mayorkas, thanks to one deciding vote.

The issue is unlikely to be taken up in the Senate, given its Democrat majority. Some Democrats are starting to crack over the border crisis. They are admitting something has to be done. But they are far from accusing anyone in the Biden administration over the issue. And they would not further hurt Biden’s reelection chances by convicting Mayorkas.

But the vote was important, in that it sent a message to the American people. Republicans are opposed to the border crisis and they are trying to hold accountable those they believe are responsible.

Those who did not vote with the party will have to explain to voters why.

Key Takeaways:

  • House Republicans successfully impeached DHS head Mayorkas.
  • They managed to pass the measure by just a single vote.
  • Republicans have blamed Mayorkas for the ongoing border crisis.
