Election integrity has been a big concern for millions of Americans since the controversial 2020 presidential election.

Many voters still don’t trust the system and believe it’s “rigged” – or can be rigged – to favor the party in power. And if this is the case, it means there’s no way any Republican will get into the White House.

But now there’s another problem — and it could be impossible to notice, or stop.

In the past few weeks, multiple people of influence have demanded that we roll back our dedication to Artificial Intelligence (AI) research. This includes Tesla and SpaceX boss Elon Musk.

They say it’s the sort of thing that is starting to get scary, and humanity might not be ready for what it brings.

And Gary Marcus, professor emeritus of cognitive science at New York University and AI expert, said we really need to be worried about what AI could do to our election systems.

Advanced artificial intelligence platforms could pose a danger to election security as soon as 2024, with some experts speculating they could become a major source of misinformation.

‘We should be scared s—less,’ Gary Marcus, professor emeritus of cognitive science at New York University and an AI expert, told Fortune last week.

Last week, an apparent fake Twitter account under the name of the Chicago Lakefront News posted a photo of Chicago mayoral candidate Paul Vallas, with a faked recording.

In that record, Vallas is heard to say that in “his day,” police officers would actually kill as many as 18 people in their career “and no one would bat an eye.”

This tweet was seen and reacted to by thousands of users, and many people believed it to be real — despite it being completely exposed as a fake. And this fake was generated by an AI platform.

Marcus says things like this will increase in number over time, and probably at a very rapid pace. As he told Fortune:

It is hard to see how AI-generated misinformation will not become a major force in the next election.

This “generative AI” could also be used as a tool for America’s enemies, who can use it to target American voters with a massive amount of lies and other misinformation.

The worst part is that it will appear legitimate to most, and many won’t question it if it’s something they want to believe, anyway. This could lead to an endless tidal wave of lies designed by AI to impact voting.

On the other hand, some claim the technology isn’t quite far enough along just yet.

Brookings Institute fellow Chris Meserole said AI likely won’t play a huge role in the 2024 presidential election, but he did say it “will look significantly different than 2020 or 2016.”

And all experts say there’s no stopping this, so it will just become a bigger and bigger problem as the years go by.

With just about everyone connected to social media and news outlets 24/7, it’s easy to see just how damaging AI-generated campaigns can be. Weaponizing these tools to get votes almost seems inevitable.

It’s definitely going to make people think twice about the headlines and social media posts they see in the future, that’s for certain.
