Democrats are having a bad time after another one of their team members faces a scandal being pursued by federal prosecutors. This latest scandal involves a controversial figure in Alabama state politics.
Alabama State Rep. John Rogers (D) is once again in the national spotlight after the investigation broke open. He previously gained national attention over controversial remarks he made about abortion. Rogers’s comments at the time ignited a firestorm of criticism, and in this unrelated federal case he’s back in the hot seat.
From The Daily Wire:
Rogers was indicted by a federal grand jury on two counts of obstruction of justice in a case that centers around an alleged scheme to defraud the Jefferson County Community Service Fund.
The case includes charges against several people and various alleged crimes that range from wire fraud, mail fraud, money laundering, tax related charges, and obstruction of justice. Former Representative Fred L. Plump, Jr. pleaded guilty to conspiring with one of the men in the indictment and resigned from the Alabama House of Representatives.
Rogers gained national attention in 2019 as the Republican-controlled Alabama House voted 74-3 to outlaw nearly all abortion in the state. He was highly criticized for his remarks in defense of abortion.
“Some kids are unwanted, so you kill them now or you kill them later,” Rogers said. “You bring them in the world unwanted, unloved, you send them to the electric chair. So, you kill them now or you kill them later.”
His hard-hearted remarks were made on the floor of the chamber during debate over the legislation. He added comments that characterized “unwanted” children as having birth defects that lead to the actions by the mother.
Rogers exercised his right to free speech during the debate. In the federal case against him he’ll likely exercise another right to not speak except through an attorney.
