HUD Secretary Ben Carson is in many ways the embodiment of the American Dream.

Born into extreme poverty in Detroit, Dr. Carson pulled himself up by his own bootstraps and determined to make a better life for himself. He went on the graduate from Yale, author bestselling books on medicine and politics, pioneer advancements in neurosurgery, and now holds a prominent position in President Trump’s Cabinet.

Liberals have often targeted Ben Carson, even before he became HUD secretary. During the 2016 presidential race, when Carson was a candidate, he was often singled out for some of his stances and ridiculed for being a religious right-wing moron, even though he’s the only neurosurgeon to successfully separate conjoined twins joined at the back of the head.

Now that he actually holds power, their attacks on him have increased, most recently over his purchase of high-end furniture for his office.

But considering the millions he’s saved the American taxpayers, a little furniture seems a small price to pay. Now Secretary Carson is being recognized for yet another stellar change to the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

[P]erhaps the real gem in Secretary Carson’s reform efforts is taking another look at the so-called, “Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing” initiative that is based on a rule by President Obama’s HUD called “disparate impact.” Disparate impact tells communities that even if there are no complaints of discrimination in a city, there can still be racism if not enough minorities are living in more affluent areas of the community.

As a result, HUD under the Obama administration forced communities to assess this “disparate impact” racism and alleviate it by building projects in higher income areas. A more blatant example of harmful regulatory overreach and bureaucratic arrogance does not exist. Secretary Carson’s pending decision on how to handle the “disparate impact rule” could set the stage for a politically significant, and symbolically important, frontal attack on liberal social engineering at HUD that would have a massive political windfall.

This is not the first time Carson has attempted to clean up the wasteful and inefficient Department he has been appointed to maintain. Last year he uncovered over $500 billion in bookkeeping errors when he ordered an audit of the HUD.

There have been a lot of these kinds of things going on, quiet reforms, changes in policies and procedures, that are not always flashy, but they are extremely effective.

This latest action is sure to disturb the liberal hornet’s nest even more, but Carson refuses to stop poking it. He recognizes that liberal policies have hurt, not helped, the black community, most especially those in poverty like he once was.

He got off the Democrat plantation by refusing to fall into their welfare trap, and because he’s a successful Christian conservative black man who won’t play by their regulations and rules, he will continue to draw their ire.

But Carson also has many defenders on the right who will continue to applaud his efforts to get people off of government assistance so they can live up to their full potential, just as Carson did himself.
