In recent weeks, Biden has been making moves unpopular even among Democrats. Numerous progressives, for instance, oppose his support of the Israel-Hamas war.
This comes as Democrats become increasingly vocal about replacing Biden as their candidate for the 2024 Election.
Now, Biden’s administration is set to approve a request that has a number of groups outraged. And even Democrats are openly opposing his administration’s move.
From Fox News:
The Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) is expected to issue a final environmental impact statement (EIS) potentially green-lighting the Oregon-based Coquille Indian Tribe’s proposal to develop and operate a casino outside its territory in Medford, Oregon, as soon as this week…
“The bottom line is if the Coquille Tribe is allowed to build another casino in Oregon, it will likely lead to allout gaming conflicts between Oregon and California tribes,” Democratic Oregon Sens. Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley, and Democratic Sen. Alex Padilla of California wrote last year to Interior Secretary Deb Haaland.
Conflict is exploding among Democrats after the Biden administration announced it would approve plans for a second casino run by the Coquille Indian Tribe–outside its protected territory. The tribe had previously built a casino outside its territory, approved by the Biden administration.
The California Nations Indian Gaming Association, Tribal Alliance of Sovereign Indian Nations, and other tribes have opposed this decision. They claim this decision by Biden violates their own rights to the land–land which does not belong to the Coquille Tribe.
Joining their fight are Democrats, including Sens. Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley of Oregon and Sen. Alex Padilla of California. They say this move by Biden would have “a detrimental impact on tribes in Oregon and California.” These Democrats are suggesting that these tribes would lose money if a tribe from outside the region is able to build a casino.
Indian Tribes have been using casinos as a major means of generating income. The United States government must approve of these projects, however. And it appears Biden’s move to allow this tribe to build outside its land could lead to disaster for others.
Other Democrats have also voiced opposition to the Biden administration. It’s unclear if Biden will listen to the complaints of members of his own party, or continue the agenda of his former boss.
- Joe Biden plans to approve an Indian casino outside the tribe’s designated territory.
- A large coalition of Democrats and Indian tribes have opposed this plan.
- This comes as Democrats become increasingly vocal against Biden’s decisions.
